As I prepare to attend the graduation commencement at American Military University next month, I am thrilled to share with you the exciting news of being honored as the 2023 recipient of The Mary Kim Ward Resilience and Service Award. This recognition holds a special place in my heart as it acknowledges my unwavering dedication to advocating for women in the military and survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

My Journey of Discovery

As an alumni member of the American Military University, graduating in December 2022, my educational journey spanned over eight years and was filled with challenges and triumphs that have shaped my path.

I experienced deployments to Afghanistan and other undisclosed locations, along with numerous assignments that brought me face-to-face with the realities of combat. Through these experiences, I witnessed loss and returned home with a deep sense of personal trauma.

But, in the face of adversity, I found the strength to rebuild my life, creating a beautiful future for my daughter and myself. I transformed my pain into a guiding light, a road map for others seeking safety and hope. This journey has led me to become an Amazon best-selling author, with my books providing inspiration and support to those who have walked similar paths.

I’m equally honored to share that I have been awarded the prestigious NAACP Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award, a recognition that holds significant meaning in my journey of service and advocacy.

Presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), this award acknowledges the contributions of military members and Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees who have exemplified the core values of their respective Military Service or DoD Component while actively supporting the civil rights movement within the Armed Forces or the Federal civilian workforce.

Receiving these two awards strengthens my resolve to continue fostering an environment of equal opportunity, diversity, and inclusion. It highlights the ongoing work we must undertake to break down barriers, eliminate discrimination, and create a supportive culture where every individual can thrive. I’m committed to leveraging this recognition to further advocate for the mentorship, development, and advancement of all personnel, particularly women and minorities, in government service and the Armed Forces.

Empowering Women and Amplifying Voices

Central to my life’s purpose is the drive to seek knowledge, not only to better myself but also to serve others. Even after a hiatus from school, I returned stronger than ever, transforming my two-point GPA into a remarkable academic achievement with honors. Through this journey, I have come to realize my full potential–and a strength I’m proud to share.

My recent awards symbolize the commitment and dedication I’ve poured into my advocacy work, supporting survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and championing the cause of women in the military.

Advocacy has been the cornerstone of my journey, fueled by a deep passion to create a more equitable and inclusive world–particularly for our sisters in the Armed Forces. And I’m both moved and reminded by the stories I hear every day from my colleagues, readers, and classmates about the need for change. However challenging, these important stories can inspire others and foster resilience in the face of adversity. I’m thankful and humbled to serve as a testament to the importance of advocating for women’s rights and amplifying the voices of others who’ve survived harrowing experiences.
